Self-Mastery

This week was about self-mastery and I really liked what I learned from them. Here is what stood out this week.

1. "Success Is Gauged by Self-Mastery" By President N. Eldon Tanner. Three parts to this talk stood out to me. "He who cannot establish dominion over himself will have no dominion over others.” "Character is determined by the extent to which we can master ourselves toward good ends." "I want to emphasize that if you never take the first you will never take the second." If we don't have control over ourselves we are not going to master what we want. I need to be better about certain things in my life that I have not mastered. It's crazy but it's nothing serious as far as my eternal progression but my personal mastery is not there. Some things I'm great at. I decided long ago that I wouldn't do things like drink, smoke, do drugs, and other serious things. That was easy. Other things like being lazy or eating too much sugar is hard for me. I need to figure out how to master that part so that I am healthier. It's still a part of taking care of the body I was given. I have a quote that I have displayed that says "Don't make food your idol" and it's true.

2. "How Entrepreneurs Craft" by Amar Bhide. This was a hard article for me to read. It was a lot to take in. However, I realized something that I needed to hear. That was to not just sit on research for years before I make a move. Those that jump into it seem to do just as good or even better than those that don't. I do know that I learn as I go. Years ago my daughter wanted to do homeschooling. I didn't know anything of how to get started and I wanted to know everything before we went into it. I had a friend that was already homeschooling and she did help but I just needed to do it. When we finally went into homeschooling I was able to figure things out along the way and everything is fine. That is how I need to do it with my business. I know enough to get started. Just do it. I also do need to have a business plan.

3. I love that some of the videos I watched really emphasized that we need to make sure that we are remembering the most important focus we should have. That is God and family. We are not going to look back at our lives and think about our business and how we did awesome or not or how much time we spent at the office. We may look back whistfully and realize that we spent too much time at work and not with our families. Or, that we didn't involve God or have a personal relationship with Him.

4. "Mastery" by George Leonard. I learned about the Five Master Keys this week.

  • Key #1 - Instruction - Being the instructor takes a certain kind of humility. We can't think that those we teach can learn from us effectively if we are teaching with humility. We want to be happy to see those we teach surpass us. As a teacher, we want to give praise for the things done right and constructive criticism for the things needed to work on. Being an expert goes along with skills and knowledge. We must have humility, patience, and empathy to be able to teach effectively. Also, to give the student an opportunity to use the skills and knowledge they learned.
  • Key #2 - Practice - The person that practices longer than a practice is for, will gain more skills.
  • Key #3 - Surrender - Even if you are a master at something, that doesn't mean you will be a master of another thing. Be humble enough to be a learner again. "For the master, surrender means there are no experts. There are only learners."
  • Key #4 - Intentionality - Using our minds to visualize how a play would go, way before you ever set foot on the field. Or in whatever field you are in. Arnold Schwarzenneger "The first step is to create the vision, because when you see the vision there - the beautiful vision - that creates the 'want power.'"
  • Key #5 - The Edge - Keep going. Once you have been through all these steps keep going. "Before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood and carry water." Keep going through the motions.
I look forward to taking what I have learned this week and applying them to what I am doing. Art is mostly what I am thinking of at the moment. It can be in whatever I am doing though.
