Overcoming Challenges

In the talk "However Long and Hard the Road " by Jeffrey R. and Patricia T. Holland, Sister Holland said "The only limitations you have are those you set on yourselves." I find that a lot of times that is the case. We put expectations for ourselves and bring ourselves down because we don't think we are good enough or can't do it. We need to get past that and believe that we can do it. Sometimes we have to work even harder than others to finish a goal. Sometimes they are easier. The thing we need to remember is that we need to believe in ourselves and focus on the positive and keep trying. Don't give up. If we have a positive outlook and keep trying we will find that we eventually get there and we can look back and be satisfied and happy that we believed in ourselves. It always helps when we recognize God in that process and His help too.  "Good Things to Come" by Elder Holland quotes at the end of his story. “Don't you quit! You keep walkin...

Moving Forward - 7 Habits

7 Habits of Highly Effective People: “The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.” — Albert Einstein   This stood out to me. I can see the wisdom in this. I know that many times the significant problems we face may not even be what we created but I feel that it can be taken in the same context. If we are staying static in a problem we are going to keep thinking the same. Put some work into the issue. Involve the Lord and he will give you new insights (from Him) that will bring a new thinking.  The habits that have the most meaning for me, or at least stood out to me the most at this time, are the ones that are on the "public victory" part. Habit 4 – Think win/win. Habit 5 – Seek first to understand . . Then to be understood. Habit 6 – Synergize.  In Think win/win I have found that I need to work on that. We, as a human race, seem to play victims and don't go into discussions as working togethe...

Self-Mastery

This week was about self-mastery and I really liked what I learned from them. Here is what stood out this week. 1. "Success Is Gauged by Self-Mastery" By President N. Eldon Tanner. Three parts to this talk stood out to me. "He who cannot establish dominion over himself will have no dominion over others.” "Character is determined by the extent to which we can master ourselves toward good ends." "I want to emphasize that if you never take the first you will never take the second." If we don't have control over ourselves we are not going to master what we want. I need to be better about certain things in my life that I have not mastered. It's crazy but it's nothing serious as far as my eternal progression but my personal mastery is not there. Some things I'm great at. I decided long ago that I wouldn't do things like drink, smoke, do drugs, and other serious things. That was easy. Other things like being lazy or eating too much sugar ...

Skill, Character, or Luck

This week I have learned to be intentional in what I do. In the readings and the videos I realized that I need to be better about being more motivated and focused on my goals and how I lead my life. Here are some things that stood out to me. 1. In the talk "Perseverance" By President James E. Faust he says, "Perseverance is demonstrated by those who keep going when the going gets tough, who don’t give up even when others say, “It can’t be done.” I remember when I was just starting out in school a couple years ago we learned about what it meant to have grit. This makes me think about those who succeed when everything seems to be stacked against them. That have grit. They persevere through the hard times. I had to write an essay on it and I chose to talk about those who were trying to become Navy Seals. The men who seemed to be the strongest and most able were not always the ones that made it. Sometimes it was the more small and scrawny (by most standards) who end up makin...
